DHB/Crown Prescribing Guidelines
Below are general prescribing guidelines. They may not apply in all areas.
Crown hospital staff members must have authority to prescribe from their manager.
Custom made surgical footwear, KAFOs, and complex knee bracing can only be prescribed by a hospital (or Orthotic Centre Assessment Clinic) Specialist.
Hospital doctors may prescribe all orthoses up to custom made surgical footwear, KAFOs and other complex orthoses.
Hospital physiotherapist may prescribe off-the-shelf products and non complex orthoses.
Hospital occupational therapist may prescribe off-the-shelf products and non complex orthoses.
DHB employed community physiotherapist may prescribe off-the-shelf products and non complex orthoses.
DHB employed paediatric physiotherapists may prescribe soft good and non complex orthoses and may re-prescribe AFO, etc. originally prescribed a specialist. Senior physiotherapist may also prescribe original AFOs, and similar when there is no specialist involved with the child.
Ministry of Education employed physiotherapist may prescribe to the same level as a DHB employed paediatric physiotherapists. This does not apply in all regions.
DHB employed community nurses may not prescribe, but may refer to the orthotic assessment clinic.
DHB employed podiatrist may prescribe all lower limb orthotics except custom made footwear, KAFOs, and other complex orthoses.
